Thats right, you read the title of this article correctly. As Libya tries to claim this is a threat to THEIR sovereign rights, it is actually Greece’s sovereign rights that are being violated. Why? Because these are GREEK territorial waters, islands, and EEZ rights.
Tensions have risen between Greece and Libya (with support from Turkey), where Libya claims that Greece’s hydrocarbon exploration, granted by the EU, is considered a violation of Libya’s ‘sovereign rights’. According to the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the exploration of southern Crete is within ‘disputed territory’ despite no legal backing. The only ones who call this a dispute are Turkey and Libya, while the entire international community considers these EEZ territories to belong to Greece. Despite these empty challenges and pathetic claims, Greece does not back down and has stated it will continue with its plans for Crete. Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis will be visiting Libya in Tripoli around July, and these issues will stand out in the meetings.
