According to a report by JUNO News, CPC leader Pierre Poilievre “suggests capping immigration at Harper-era levels”.
What he means by this is capping the immigration rate at between 200,000-250,000 per year. Poilievre says the math behind these numbers is that he is attributed the rate of immigrants to the number of houses being built. “We were building about the same number of homes as we were adding people, so we had a housing surplus. I would bring in a simple mathematical formula: we cannot bring in people faster than we add houses,” said Poilievre. That would be nice, if only he hadn’t forgotten about other issues in Canada. What about the job market? Where will all these new immigrants work? Once again, we would be back in the same situation, where more Canadians would be left on the streets and unemployed. Also take a look at our birth rates. Poilievre’s immigration rate simply equals 1 million+ new immigrants per year. With 250,000 immigrants entering the country, and Canadian birth rates at around 300,000 a year, 40% of Canada’s new population will be coming from abroad! 40% is a big factor! Essentially, Poilievre’s plan is mass immigration but at a slower rate.
When you invite someone into your home, you give them a room over their heads, you feed them, you take care of them, they work, and so on. Poilievre only seems to focus on just immigrants in terms of housing and forgets to incorporate any other factors. Where will they work (and so on)? 200,000-250,000 per year is still too much! Canada is not at the proper capabilities to take care of all these new people.
