Freeland lied: Small businesses are still being taxed on carbon rebates

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB), small businesses in Canada are being taxed on their carbon tax rebates despite commitments from Freeland saying they would be tax-free.
“It’s just the most unhelpful time to provide even more tax uncertainty at a time when businesses are scrambling to deal with the potential tariff issue, and so that makes this doubly bad,” said CFIB president and CEO Dan Kelly. The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) informed CFIB of this news, stating that the rebate is considered ‘government assistance to taxpayers’ which is subject to income tax. Despite Freelands’ promises to Canadians, no legislation has been passed to officially make these empty promises true. This decision has left small business owners feeling betrayed and uncertain about their financial future. The lack of clear communication and follow-through from the government only adds to the frustration and instability faced by these businesses.
