This is exactly why Canada needs self defence laws, allowing people to bear arms, and protection for those who use weapons in their own defence. Because if this man hadn’t had anything to protect himself with, or if that man had used a firearm instead of bear spray, the situation would have been a lot worse for the innocent victim.
A 30-year-old Winnipeg man is in custody and facing numerous charges after attempting assault on a city bus. The incident was unprovoked, and the man had begun tackling transit riders. One of the riders protected not only himself, but others around him by using bear spray against the attacker. The 30-year-old then fled, and was later arrested by police for crimes including assault, assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possessing a weapon.
Thankfully no one was injured, and the man carrying the bear spray had to give up the spray to police. Stricter weapon regulations could leave individuals defenseless in situations where immediate protection is necessary. In this case, the use of bear spray helped prevent further harm, highlighting the importance of having access to self-defense tools. Without such options, potential victims might face greater risks during violent encounters, relying solely on law enforcement response times. Canada needs the right to bear arms, and needs to allow citizens to protect themselves. This incident underscores the need for accessible self-defense tools and the right to bear arms in Canada.
