Remember when Trump asked for a simple request from Canada to do a better job on border security in order to avoid tariffs? And do you all remember the negative response of the Liberal government, and all those in office (yes, CPC and NDP as well) in which they said that they wouldn’t do anything and would rather put in place retaliatory tariffs instead?
Well breaking news, 1 person is dead while 9 others are detained by the Canada Border Services Agency in two separate incidents at the US-Alberta border. In one case, a U.S. national was trying to enter Canada at the crossing near Coutts. The man fled the security team, which a chase started and RCMP officers were called. The man later shot himself and was pronounced dead before RCMP officers caught up to him. In a second incident, RCMP officers were called to a potential border incursion, after being raised suspicion by the United States Border Patrol (which called the RCMP). Four adults and five youths who were travelling on foot and with suitcases, were later detained for questioning.
These stories are not the first, but they are some of the more recent cases. Which is why Trump brought up the concerns. And now, after the U.S. tariffs have been paused, Canada along with Mexico have now sent around 10,000 additional personnel to the borders. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges of border security and the complexities involved in managing international relations. The increased personnel deployment indicates a recognition of the need for enhanced security measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Furthermore, the cooperation between Canada, Mexico, and the United States underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing cross-border issues effectively.
This is all Trump was asking of our Liberal government. We see the cases in front of us, and all Trump wanted was some action.
