Ford officially calls for an early Ontario election

It is now official that Ontario will be seeing an early election, in order to deal with Trump’s tariff threats.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford officially stated that on February 27, the province will take to the polls in an early election, despite the original 2026 election date. Ford has called for this election in order to deal with the tariff threats from Trump, and he believes it is now a good time to secure even more power for his Conservative party in the province.
“Right now, President Trump … has put uncertainty to every single Canadian, a lot of other countries around the world, and this isn’t going to happen overnight. It may not happen Feb. 1, I’m sure something’s coming, but this is going to be a battle for the next four years, and I want to make sure that I have a strong mandate to outlast President Trump.” said Ford. While some agree with Ford, others question his loyalty to the province. Some suggest that Ford is just pushing for more political power rather than just implementing plans for tariffs now. “While the people of Ontario are anxious about the grave threat of tariffs, Doug Ford is pursuing his own political gain,” said provincial NDP leader Marit Stiles.
Despite winning 83 seats (now 79, due to resignations) in the 2022 election, Ford wishes to gain a much larger seat share in the provincial parliament to implement his “largest mandate in Ontario’s history.”
