Will the Mitsotakis government finally respond, or will they keep their tails between their legs and let the Turks walk all over us? That’s the question on many Greeks’ minds, as Turkey prepares to escalate tensions dramatically according to reports.
Turkish news outlet, ‘Turkey Today’ posted a report stating that “Turkey is ready to drill in Libya’s EEZ”. For context, when they mean Libya’s EEZ, they really mean Greece’s EEZ, since Turkey and Libya have agreed to unofficially claim the Greek EEZ as their own with no legal backing or international recognition. Ahmed Turkoglu, General Manager of the Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO), has received the “Green light” from Turkish President Erdogan to begin drilling in Crete, near where Greek drilling ships will also be drilling. The drilling is expected to be seen over the next 6 months, but no further indication is known. The drilling will not only take place in Crete, but also near the Greek islands of Rhodes and Karpathos.
