Cohen: Canada’s persistent failure to meet NATO targets has been damaging to the country’s reputation

According to the United States ambassador to Canada, David Cohen, Trudeau’s poor defence spending is destroying Canada’s reputation on the international stage.
Despite Trump’s re-election, Canada still remains one of the few NATO members to reach minimum GDP spending on defence. Canada for the longest time has always relied on NATO. When China flew their spy balloon into North America, it was the USA who shot it down. There is more and more evidence that Canada has gotten too comfortable with relying on the USA for its defence. This dependency has raised concerns about national security and the need for Canada to enhance its own defence capabilities. Strengthening its military infrastructure and investing in domestic defence technology could reduce this reliance and ensure a more balanced partnership within NATO.
“There is no doubt that what you hear from American politicians, from other NATO allies about Canada falling so consistently short against an important metric, without the nuance of everything that follows, that it has hurt Canada’s standing in the world from a defence-related perspective,” says Cohen.
Continued reliance on the USA for defence could potentially weaken Canada’s sovereignty and decision-making autonomy in international affairs. This dependency might also limit Canada’s influence within NATO, as allies may view it as not fully committed to collective security efforts. Furthermore, in the event of shifting political dynamics in the US, Canada could find itself vulnerable if US policy changes affect their willingness to provide defence support. As Trump approaches the White House, Trudeau needs to step up and leave the rainbow flag behind and pick up the Canadian flag he has placed under the rug for so long.
