Various reactions have been generated by the movement of Kyriakos Mitsotakis to have Antonis Samaras removed from New Democracy. One of them is the statement of Kyriakos Velopoulos (leader of the ‘Greek solution’) who calls for the resignation of the prime minister.
“Since there is no good testimony from the outside and unity in a government that is faltering and collapsing, the only solution is elections,” he said.
Samaras was a former Prime Minister of Greece, and basically, Velopoulos is insinuating that if Mitsotakis can’t keep his members in order, then he can’t keep the country together. In his full speech, Velopoulos said,
“We would not bother to deal with the internal affairs of the ND, but things are more difficult and dramatic, especially with regard to our national issues. And our constitution stipulates that appeals to the polls are made only on the occasion of national issues. We have to say two things: first, the Samara conflict with Mr. Mitsotakis is about their chairs. One wants the Presidency of the Republic and the other wants to remain hooked on the prime minister’s chair, regardless of whether one denounces the other for anti-national policy. So what we have been asking for a very long time is that, beyond their feuds and beyond this parody of a party that exists in ND, we ask two things: first, the 8 or 9 controlled by Mr. Samaras, will remain in a party that Mr. Samaras denounces as anti-national? And secondly and here is the essential thing, I would say, is that since there is no good testimony from the outside and unity in a government that is faltering and collapsing, the only solution is the elections. We have been saying this for many months. So we urgently request national elections, so that the country can get out of the impasse”.
