New Democracy MPs faces jail time for fake wealth claims

New Democracy lawmaker Andreas Patsis was sentenced to prison for submitting inaccurate wealth declarations. In 2022, Patsis was revealed to own three offshore corporations based in Cyprus, contravening Greek law that prohibits parliamentarians from being shareholders or participants in offshore companies.
Earlier that year, he had been kicked out of New Democracy’s parliamentary group following allegations of involvement in the purchase of non-performing loans from banks.
This is not the first time someone from one of the major parties has been arrested for money fraud. Greek former defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos of PASOK was arrested for money laundering and faking his wealth declarations, during the Greek financial crisis.
