Today marks the anniversary of the tragic Tempi Train crash incident in Greece, which resulted in the death of over 50, mainly young students. The Greek national rail system lacked funding and safety measures, which resulted in the train collision. Greeks who take the trains have had this issue for many years. Your safety on the trains depends entirely on chance.
This is not entirely the fault of the Mitsotakis government, as it is also the fault of every former Prime Minister’s government after 1974, who continued cutting funds and corrupting the country. The result of all this tragic loss, leads to today, where Greeks take to the streets as no punishment or even a full investigation has been put in place to target those in power. The rallies took part in all major cities in Greece, with the largest taking place in the capital at Syntagma Square. Within these large groups, some small handful of people took matters into their own hands and began getting violent. In cities like Thessaloniki and Athens, masked men began throwing moltovs and clashing with police. And yet, the government did not care. Because why should they? Despite minor clashes with police, which were brief, all the rallies really did was cause road closures until the afternoon when the protesters decided to go home. The Greek people’s image truly has faded away. Is this how Greeks take action? Truly, it is shameful.
The Mitsotakis government decided to remain silent in addressing the issues, while SYRIZA politicians sided with the protestors “SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance joins its voice with Greek society across the country,” said the party. Ironic coming from SYRIZA, because prior to the New Democracy government taking office, SYRIZA was in power, and also did nothing about national rail funding. The continued inaction by successive governments highlights a systemic failure to prioritize public safety and infrastructure investment. This negligence not only erodes public trust in government institutions but also perpetuates a cycle of accountability avoidance. As a result, the Greek population remains frustrated and disillusioned, with little hope for meaningful change or justice for the victims of such tragedies.
