Six students of the Hellenic Airforce Academy were recently arrested by Turkish authorities outside Hagia Sophia for holding a Greek flag near the old church.
MIT officers arrested the students on the grounds of “religious symbols” outside of Hagia Sophia. Thankfully diplomatic intervention by Greece led to the release and return of the students. The students entered Turkey while on holiday leave from the academy, and didn’t inform them that they were heading abroad for travel. No follow-up information has been provided, and there was no political crisis over the issue.
