Ontario Premier Doug Ford floated the idea of returning to a Canada-U.S. bilateral pact like the one that predated the enactment of NAFTA in 1994.
One of the biggest issues Ford brought up was the fact that Chinese-owned car plants are popping up in Mexico and their close ties to the CCP.
“Since signing on to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Mexico has allowed itself to become a backdoor for Chinese cars, auto parts and other products into Canadian and American markets, putting Canadian and American workers’ livelihoods at risk while undermining our communities.” said Ford.
Ford proposes a trade deal with just the USA, and if anything, maybe a small separate deal with Mexico on the side. “If Mexico wants a bilateral trade deal with Canada, God bless ’em,” he said. “But I’m not going to be drawn down by these cheap imports taking men and women’s jobs from hard-working Ontarians.”
