According to an interview in Kathimerini with Greece’s Defence Minister, Nikos Dendias, Greece expects the United States to fulfill its obligations towards Greece, as outlined by Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Dendias expects to aim for a more comprehensive defence strategy, with the inclusion of adding missile systems to Greek islands, as well as Greece’s further improvements to the Navy in terms of new frigates and submarines.
It is a costly endeavor for Greece to support NATO and the national defense by undergoing all these upgrades. Dendias states that the USA, in their delaying of Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) and four C-130 aircraft, as well as support in repairing Bradley armoured vehicles is costing Greece and becoming frustrating. These upgrades could significantly enhance Greece’s defensive capabilities, providing better protection against regional threats. By modernizing its naval and missile systems, Greece would be better equipped to maintain its territorial sovereignty and deter potential aggressors. Additionally, these improvements could strengthen Greece’s position within NATO, potentially leading to greater influence and support from allied nations. The United States needs to realise this and fulfill the obligations that Blinken has promised Greece. Not doing so shows once again how the United States is all talk and no substance.
Greece has been given false hope many times before by the United States; they were not there when they were supposed to be.
