Syntagma Square riot caused by Nationalists

On September 1st, early in the morning, Greeks protested the tyranny of the government by taking to the streets at Syntagma Square. A group called “National Constituent Assembly – Direct Democracy” was at the front of this gathering, with its leader Stavros Vitalis. Stavros was born in Mandalo, Pella, Greece, in 1954. Stavros worked as a journalist after the fall of the dictatorship up until 1987, and can speak Greek, Serbian, Turkish and English.
The protest turned into a clash with police, as 33 people were detained. Police officers fired tear gas at protestors as they threw objects at police officers. As a result, protestors escalated the situation. An estimated 250 people took part in the protest, including groups from the GRC, “Greek reserve corps”, a group of Greek reservist in the special forces. “For us, The Motherland is the mother and father of all other ancestors, more honorable and humbler and holier and in a greater destiny than gods and men who have their minds”, said the GRC. Prior to the event, Stavros Vitalis called out Greeks from around the country on his YouTube page, “Revolution! September 1st!” Calling for a call back to the old Greek constitution of the days of Kapodistrias.
